Outer Hebrides LEADER has announced awards for three community-led projects worth nearly £235k. Grants totalling almost £115k have been offered to: ‘First Love Music Ltd’; ‘Hebridean Castle Trading’; and ‘Kinloch Historical Society’ – also levering-in almost £120k of external funding.

Colin Gilmour, Chairman of the Outer Hebrides LEADER Local Action Group (LAG) said:

“The LEADER LAG is delighted to support three projects which deliver economic benefits through income-generation opportunities in local communities, with a range of cultural and social benefit spin-offs in addition.”

Community Interest Company ‘Hebridean Castle Trading (HCT) is adjacent to Lews Castle College and its project includes erecting two polycrubs and installing paths to improve accessibility. It will expand the business through increasing the existing client base and provide scope for further social inclusion - creating opportunities for current service users, disabled and elderly vulnerable people as well as volunteers. The project will create opportunities for the voluntary sector and provide an area to be used by the community for allotments - providing additional training and education opportunities.

Kinloch Historical Society will recruit a Community Hub Manager to support the delivery of a range of key developments - identifying, developing and marketing new opportunities such as ‘the Mackenzie Initiative’ and taking forward formal Museum Accreditation. The role is considered critical to the Society’s endeavours to maximise its potential and the post-holder will also work in partnership with volunteers and stakeholder agencies to develop the range of existing facilities, such as the laundrette.

In Kirkibost, Great Bernera, Pete Fletcher of ‘First Love Music Limited’ will set up residential recording facility ‘Black Bay Studios’. This project invests in the redevelopment of a former fish processing factory at Kirkibost Pier - converting it to a world-class recording studio aimed at the biggest artists and labels in the UK and beyond. It is hoped the studio will be operational in 2017, supporting local musicians and promoting Gaelic music culture - providing training, educational and employment opportunities and promote the Outer Hebrides as a destination.

LEADER has been active in delivering significant community-led local development (CLLD) opportunities in local communities across the Outer Hebrides for over 25 years.
