This is a new a new community facility and visitor attraction which will provide community benefit through ceramics workshops and non-accredited training. Working collaboratively across the Uists, to provide local economic development, job creation and skills development through work placements. It will also offer mentoring support for young entrepreneurs in partnership with secondary schools & training providers.
Situated on the path of the Hebridean Way, and clearly visible from the main Lochmaddy /South Uist road, ‘Gateway to Locheport’ will provide links to the Hebridean Way and provide an all-year indoor all-weather attraction. It will promote and highlight the cultural heritage of Locheport through local knowledge & family history/stories and provide onward information on the other artist/ makers further along the Locheport road and in the wider area.
Open all year, it will provide an out of season attraction. A programme of ceramic classes will offer the wider local community engaging learning experiences on a 5-week block basis. Also, on offer will be 1-3-day block programme for more specific classes. These may be of more interest for visitors to the Hebrides. All the classes offered will provide a range of socially engaging activities which have a therapeutic benefit for the local community in darker months and something different for those visiting out of season.
